| We
at Game Ranger Catahoulas have had the privilege of getting to know
and work with the great Catahoula. Their intelligence and instincts
are absolutely astonishing. We operate a big commercial game ranch
and cattle operation in the heart of Texas between Brady and Mason
called TK14 Ranch. Because of the rough terrain and the excessive
amount of predators our Catahoulas have become an important part
of our ranching operation. We use our dogs first and foremost as
game trailing dogs. Catahoulas are excellent at trailing and finding
game. We have numerous exotic and native species of wild game, which
our dogs have to blood trail, hunt or locate. Our dogs are also
used to work our cattle and wild goats. They will hold the game
at bay, or they will try to bring them to you. After a hard days
work let the dogs hunt all the nuisance coons and hogs they want
for a little fun. A Catahoula is very independent and has the ability
to solve problems with out direction. They make the best companions
and will do anything to please you, even if they know they are at
high risk.
Over the course of several centuries the
Catahoula has changed many hands, however their duties and work
ethic have remained unchanged. The Catahoula was derived from
dogs that were bred and crossed with the red wolf by Native American
Indians. Settlers obtained these dogs from the Indians for hunting
and trailing wild game. Later ranchers obtained the Catahoula
to hunt, trail & handle their livestock. To this day the
Catahoula still has retained the same hunting and work ethic.
A Catahoulas ability and diversity to handle any kind of animal
has made them very popular with game outfitters who have to deal
with large predators. Catahoulas versatility is why these dogs
are so valuable to those of us who need an all-purpose dog. Many
people believe that this cannot be accomplished with just one
dog, however we do it all the time.
